(to borrow my fave phrase from Ms Mary Ann Moss)Dear Perusers:
You are no doubt wondering if I am keeping up with this blog..well truth be told..sort of.
Actually I have been quite busy over HERE as that is where I have been putting all my DLPs and my current August photo Challenges. In other words, RIGHT NEXT DOOR.
Normal blogging should resume once August is finished but I am not taking any bets. <g>

But as a thank you for checking on me, here is a shot of my rain blessed geraniums.
It has been a Very Long Hot Dry Spell for us 'rain coasters' and though we will probably moan about the Nuvember monsoons, right now, the most joyous sound for us, is rain on our rooftops!
Blessings of Rain to those that need it! I know my Garden is certainly happy.Ladytruenorthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05733811827433896413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6668963455680831191.post-4628417338337411142014-07-24T19:58:00.002-07:002014-07-24T20:46:21.409-07:00Knocked for six - and A Glorious Ladysmith Beach Day!On June 21/14, we had a serious 'prang' with our beloved Honda and though Mr Bear was not seriously injured, I of course got whiplashed and dashboard knees and our Honda was a write off!
So I have been busy dealing with the paperwork that the Insurance companies demand, along with trying to get remedial treatment from the chiro, the massage guy and the TPI man.
Note: Never have a motor accident in the summer, all your friendly remedial people are on holidays or shortstaffed!
Once more in honour of my Scandinavian ancestry, I made a Midsommar wreath to hang on the front door to welcome Sommar in! The Quail Hill Tradition is that you use only those flowers and plants that you can find on the property on The Day.

This year it is a bittersweet tradition, as I have in the past few years made one for our front door as well as one for an amazing couple who live about two hours north of us. I made the square one with lavender and heather for Don whose wife Bette left us in March. I do hope he likes it and that it brings him a bit of joy to his rather lonely days.

Tonight Mr Bear, our friend Mr B and I sat on the back deck and after a 'it couldn't be beat, doing your own hamburgers on the grill' dinner, Mr Bear brought out his treat: fresh picked this morning strawberries, cleaned and lightly sprinkled with vanilla sugar. Mr B contributed the ice cream.
These strawberries are so sweet and fragrant it was like eating perfumed hearts. No white heart to be seen, these were left to bask in the sunshine and take their own very sweet time to ripen. None of the hurry up and wait California strawberry! no sirree bob, these were the real deal and brought back memories of picking them in our parent's gardens, still warm from the sun.
Considering that it starts on July 1, that should give me enough lead time to get my house in order and organize some sort of studio in which to put all my play stuff that I will no doubt be using.
I am also thrilled that my conversation with John (a good friend and WordPress genius) led to him helping the Ms MAM get her new Sketchbookery site launched! Yay for networking!
So, now to make a sketchbook or find one...
Here is one of my sketches from the trip: the blackberry brambles had almost entirely taken over the barn!

Blessings to all those sketchwarriors out there, braving the bugs and the elements while you 'art'!
Goodness me, is it June Already?
Time to get ready for our annual MidSummer wreath making (with candid photos of Mr Bear struggling to make one again, lol), but before I do, I just wanted to let you know that I have decided to put my Documented Life Project into its own blog so I can keep this one clear for photos and poetry and whatever else strikes my fancy.
So please note on the top right hand side bar - A Documented Life Project So Far.
Thank you ever so.
Since we have returned from our two weeks holiday away, our garden has become deliriously riotous with what only can be described as SuperGrowth with Don's peonies joining in the fray. Here is a bloom I picked yesterday, a delightful 'ball' of soft soft feathery petals and subtle scent.
Blessings to all lawn warriors out there battling the grass that threatens to choke the motor!
Who knew that Amadeus was such an ardent gardener?
His music perfectly suits whatever gardening tasks I have to do, plunk out goes the soil, plunkity plunk plonk, in goes the plant and tweetly tweet on the flutes just to keep the birds happy. (they join in, especially that red winged blackbird who has recently moved to one of our nearby trees.)
I am constantly amazed by the tech wizardry of my bluetooth pendant slung around my neck as it goes out and hunts for the channel I have selected on my Galaxy tablet. Ah ha! found it: and CalmRadio Mozart comes in loud and clear in my ear pieces.

Gardening to Mozart is one heck of a way to spend a pleasurable mild overcast but not rainy afternoon, 'doing up' my Provencal flower boxes. I missed doing these last year, so I am replacing the pansies with lobelia and geraniums in hopes I will attract the swallowtail butterflies and hummingbirds once more.

Blessings of Mozart or any other great composer on your Gardening endeavours!Ladytruenorthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05733811827433896413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6668963455680831191.post-58225056304241230132014-04-19T20:53:00.000-07:002014-04-19T20:55:27.408-07:00Sunbeam Chocolate Cake for Ms P's Birthday!Since Ms P doesn't 'do' facebook or ever read my blog, I feel it's

has tried the silicone bundt pan and being a 'belt and suspenders' kind

I can appreciate that school yards and busy sidewalks don't want messy fruit dropping on the walk, but in a front yard? We have a neighbour who has an ornamental cherry that must be at least 40 years old and it is showy, very showy, but only for a very brief time and then, bam, that's it. No fruit after all that waiting. As Nero Wolfe would say, 'phooey'.
Victoria Clinic Day for the Bears.
Though Victoria is only 45 minutes to the south of us, it is about 3 weeks ahead as far as 'the blooming' is concerned. Already her cherry and plum blossoms were being blown off the trees and creating what the locals call; 'victoria snow'. (they can say that with pride as they really don't get much of the real stuff).
After my birthday break away at the Kingfisher Spa, I am now almost a week into the 2nd year of my (x) decade and on this rainy windy day here at Quail Hill I can feel it in my bones. What was it that Kathyrn Hepburn said, "Growing old is not for wimps!" -
Agree. wholeheartedly.
We are now back to the grindstone (Mr Bear is
mumbling about how much he hates computers and bills)...typical welcome home
stuff. lol

But for those of you who want a catchup of my mini break:
Here are some shots of the Kingfisher Spa and etc.

WELL of course, wouldn't you know it..it SNOWED
on my birthday morning! but in the afternoon the sun shone and the snow melted.
It was only slush by the time we had to pack up and leave for home.

Good thing too as we had invited my lifelong
friend Linda M to have dinner with us at the Kingfisher’s Breakwater Restaurant
and she was texting all day: is the snow gone?, how is the weather? etc. This may
seem a funny thing to do as she is only an hour away, but we have
micro climates here on the Island and the weather can be like day and night depending on where you are.

So there I was all tucked up, nice and comfy with
a hot beanjuice by my elbow (lovingly prepared by Mr Bear) and I got down to the
Serious Business of Unwrapping my BD gifts! The most precious was Mr Bear’s – he
gave me a BlueJohn ring, to replace the one that I had bought in Wales years ago and subsequently lost during our various moves. It is now quite comfortably
encircling my 3rd finger on my right hand on top of my silver pandora
ring.

Mr Bear calls this next shot my ‘dive and delve’ photo.
My mean nasty evil tricksy cousins, knowing
full well I hate to wait, gave the package to Mr Bear with Strict Instructions I
was not to open it UNTIL THE DAY! NO peeking, no shaking, no poking, no
prodding! So he did. and I waited somewhat impatiently for it to be plunked on
my lap.

All in all, it was great break away and I even
managed to get some‘arting’ in, on the first night there. I have joined in on
an ‘art journal page’ swap and I have to make a dozen of the darn things. That
night I was able to get two done! Only 10 more to go! Yay!

I have found that I am happiest when I can work
with my hands other than typing! For me the best vacation will be someplace I
can either take a workshop in mixed media or sketching. I have fallen in love
with Derwent’s Inktense pencils as I like the fact they are permanent when dry.
And o my heavens. o dear, somebodysaveme, WASHI TAPE! I think I may have to
resort to doing my own to save $$$. Those things are addictive.

As for the Kingfisher Spa itself: if you book through
booking dot com to save bucks be aware that you will be put in the ‘old’
section. No heated tile bathroom floors, no kitchenette, only a barely working
bar fridge in need of defrosting, (good thing it was cold out, we used the
balcony to keep our yogurt and beverages cool) no sink other than bathroom sink
to wash up your cups and spoons and something surprising HARD HARD water
(obviously this part of the hotel is on well water) I have no problem with that,
but for pete’s sake get a water softener. There was NO way I was taking a shower
in the room. If you stay there (and it is cheaper) you can use the showers at
the pool I suppose.

However The Breakwater Restaurant though
pricey has good portions and the food is EXCELLENT..they even had a REAL
crème brulee on the dessert menu, not your substituted scrambled eggs with a
brown sugar topping (caramel flan) which I detest.

I do recommend that when you go, you put a small flashlight in your pocket, as it may be a bit hard to read the bill when it comes round - squinting at it by candlelight is a tad tricky! lol.

Well that’s all for now from me (who like the
hobbit is celebrating her 111th birthday), Mr Bear with Sidney happily waving at you from
Inside and of course Quentin and his Court of around 2 dozen quails here at
Quail Hill.

Bright Stars and Blessings to all who read this.

Bonne Sant Valentin!
Goodness, was it really back in 2010?
I dusted it off and put it on here so you could have something to look at while I get my collective scribblings over the past week or so together and mangle it into some sort of a later post.
I have just been informed by Mr Bear that the weather is just too dam glorious to be indoors at the 'puter and we are to take my new baby (a canon powershot a1400) for a walk.
How can I disagree with that?
So with that order, I wish all of my readers the Blessing of a Glorious Sunny Valentine Day to you where'er you may be. May you have a warm heart.Ladytruenorthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05733811827433896413noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6668963455680831191.post-53942670450175553472014-02-06T20:25:00.003-08:002014-02-06T20:30:20.603-08:00February! And the Documented Life Project/BOD2014 continues..Dear Perusers:
I have finished doing January's weeks in my Planner and it's a
good thing that I moved everything over to my trusty Green Leather 3 ring binder as
there was NO way that a simple composition book would accommodate all the
'extra bits' I have shoved (and will be shoving) into it! As it
is, I am only keeping 3 months at a time, so it is much lighter and
easier to handle. Nothing is more annoying than bits and pieces
falling out when you try to open it!
I think my Planner is related to
Fibber McGee's Closet!
As Part of the BOD2014 project (see previous post or click on the
Effy Wild badge on the sidebar) the phrase 'What Was Beautiful About
Today' was added to our Journaling prompts.
During the day I may not remember to scribble down all the minutiae of
my happenings, but so far I have managed to (star*} the 'Daily
Beauties'.
At the end of January I had a sheet full!
I am hoping to take the time during my upcoming Birthday Retreat
Weekend to make a nice colourful insert; perhaps along the lines of
what Valerie Sjodin
does.
(photo of Abba's Love Weekend (c) Valerie Sjodin)
I had taken her Edges and Embellishments course a while ago and have
been wanting to put what I learned into practice.
February this year has started out with amazingly bright sunshiny days but bitter cold temps as the thermometer hovers around 0c during the day and then plummets to -5 or more during the night.
Since it is too cold to venture out unless we honestly have to, I have been happily arting and creating birthday gifts for my two cousins, whose birthdays 'shoulder' mine: February 8, 10 and 12 respectively. I will show you what I have done once they have received them (I think at least one of them reads this blog so Mum's the Word). In the meantime here is what I have been up to, in my Journal Planner:
This week's DLP Challenge was 'secret message'.
Write it down, then cover it up except for one word.
Frankly, I was not prepared for the cathartic effect of doing something which on the outset seemed so childishly simple.
Since my hands seem to cramp up in the mornings when I am at my most 'artive', I chose to type out my thoughts and wow!
Two events came to mind immediately and the words flowed from my fingers as I wrote in what would probably be called a 'white heat'!

Once the words were down in black and white, it was a joy to rip it up into pieces and gesso it to my water colour paper. I carefully saved the word 'decision' from the forest of words and using my newly bought Derwent Inktense Pencils (hooray) and a bit of collage, cobbled something together.
Two miraculous things happened on the day I was doing this:
1 - the gesso I used to glue down my pieces did a wonderful thing 'on it's own' - it created a perfect rendition of a quill (complete with feather!) - which I carefully dried to in order to keep it's shape then outlined it with a black fine tip sharpie.
2 - On our way to town, a cloud formation over top of a local mountain was a perfect 'quill' shape!
There was no way I could have planned this if I had tried.
3 - Then in my mailbox: a wonderful quote from Rumi which perfectly capsulated my thoughts regarding that secret message I had written!.
* If you are seeking, seek us with joy
For we live in the kingdom of joy.
Do not give your heart to anything else
But to the love of those who are clear joy,
Do not stray into the neighborhood of despair.
For there are hopes: they are real, they exist -
Do not go in the direction of darkness -
I tell you: suns exist.
- Jalal-ud-Din Rumi
(Translated by Andrew Harvey from A Year of Rumi)
I put the poem into the collage mix and taped my two photos from the day: Divine Quill, and Sundog (which I think goes splendidly with the last phrase: ' I tell you: suns exist.')
Blessings to all those who find solace in doing a spate of arting in the morning 'Before Anything Else'Ladytruenorthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05733811827433896413noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6668963455680831191.post-10711363039679784082014-01-13T20:47:00.002-08:002014-01-13T21:58:51.939-08:00Does my Life Really Need to be DocuMental'd?Dear Perusers:
Not sure would be my response at this juncture. Who would actually care to read about My Year 2014? The Road I am being led down, by my Muse (that dancing twirling pencil poking She), has taken me to this site - The Documented Life Project.
Sounds grand doesn't it?
And here I was hoping for a more quiet artful year, one in which I did not get gleefully butterfly distracted by every bright and colourful e course that came waltzing by! (insert sigh here)
So far I have managed to mangle- smunch 3 Courses in to One Planner - the BOD 2014 Session 1, the Documented Life Planner (DLP) and an occasional 'flip through' of my ebook: No Excuses Art Journaling!
From my last post, you will note that I wanted to 'art' first thing 'pon awakening' even Before Bean and Verticality - (ie coffee and being upright) and so far, I have managed that. Today for example, I zentangled my name and being the evil body that I am, I pointed another friend to the Tangle Patterns site so that she too could become addicted. (I deemed it only fair that another artful being share the joy).
So here are the Progress Pix from the Challenges that BOD and DLP have given me: (note-BOD started a week later than DLP)

DLP Week 2: - Self Portrait :: BOD Week 1: Your Word for the Year (for me it is EMERGE)
My 'selfie' will 'peek' through the window in the 'eiffel tower' envelope
DLP Week 3 - Junk Mail Envelope :: BOD Week 2 : Poem: Colour is to Winter what Music is to Silence (Effy Wild) - I could probably use my DLP envelope as my answer to that challenge. I may do something more, undecided at this point, though my crayons are calling me LOUDLY.. <g>
Blessings to all those frustrated E course addicts out there (like me) who have signed up for things and found out that there are NOT 36 hours in a day! darnitallanyway!

For A New
Beginning
By John O’Donahue

In out of
the way places of the heart
Where your thoughts never think to wander
This beginning has been quietly forming
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.
For a long time it has watched your desire
Feeling the emptiness grow inside you
Noticing how you willed yourself on
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.
It watched you play with the seduction of safety
And the grey promises that sameness whispered
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent
Wondered would you always live like this.
Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream
A path of plenitude opening before you.
Though your destination is not clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is one with your life’s desire.
Awaken your spirit to adventure
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.

*

Part of my Inner Work this year is to pay attention more often to the Muse (even if she does poke me in the side with her sharp pencil at 2am!). One of the things I did to keep her quiet (or mumbling less) was to download the ebook: No Excuses Art Journaling by Gina Armfield, from which a very intelligent bit of wisdom was gleaned - take just five minutes at least before anything else in the day happens to do your art in your dayplanner. This means, no email, no f/b, no twitter. Nope, that tablet is only tuned to an internet radio station that plays lovely Gregorian chant or Chorale. And of course, this means (as one guest writer wrote) DOING IT IN BED! Yahoo! My art supplies now occupy a soft sided carryon case, which by reaching down, can be grabbed and plunked up beside me, as I lie there and contemplate the Day. It was part of this exercise, that led me to making my Book Of Days (Effy Wild's 12 week course) in a Dayplanner, and using up all those pesky brown envelopes (which we seem to get a ton of at this time of the year) as holders for my weekly 5x8 artpiece.

I have just finished doing Week 1: Your Word for the Year and when I read these words from Mr Donahue's poem, the word EMERGE leaped out at me. That was IT! My Word.

This beginning has been quietly forming

Waiting until you were ready to emerge.

Along with that poem, another one came to mind and I wondered if they would be close enough in feeling so that I could essentially make one poem using their first four lines.

Here is the other poem: The Restlessness of Being a Seed by John Soos

To be of the Earth is to know

With one eye on the weather (it had snowed two days before) and temperatures (it had been freezing) we were blessed by the Solstice fairy with misty rain and above zero C! Hooray, as the C and M's driveway is, can we say, challenging at best, and next to impossible in slush?
This is only a partial photograph as all through the afternoon and on into the evening, platters of food such as smoked beef and chicken fresh from the smoker out on the balcony, were brought out along with a varieity of homemade liquers and spirits and of course Desserts!
It was not only a Feast for the eyes, but for the senses as well! I think Mr Bear and I rolled out there stuffed (as the Irish would say) like an egg.
Here is a picture of Noreen learning how to lucet.
We had a wonderful time and tonight the drive home was a typical mild west coast winter drive; as Mr Bear remarked, 'this is the kind of westcoast Christmas that I love - wet and mild'.
